Application Developer (Wordpress), Tier 1

The Application Developer (WordPress), Tier 1 plays a key role in building and maintaining engaging, high-performing websites powered by WordPress. This role is ideal for a developer who enjoys creating custom themes and plugins while collaborating closely with design and content teams. You’ll help deliver scalable, user-friendly digital experiences that meet both client and business needs.
 

The Application Developer (WordPress), Tier 1 will be a part of the thunder::tech Development Department. The Development Department is responsible for day-to-day project production and is composed of four teams: application development, front-end development, digital support and systems operations (sysops). The Application Developer (WordPress), Tier 1 will work closely with designers, front-end developers and project managers on client projects and will report to the Senior Director of Development.


Location: Cleveland-Akron area with the ability to be in the office two days per week (Tuesday and Wednesday).
 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

WordPress Development & Customization

  • Develop, customize and maintain WordPress websites.
  • Build custom WordPress themes and plugins to meet project requirements.
  • Implement designs with attention to responsiveness, accessibility and performance.

Integration & Optimization

  • Integrate WordPress with third-party services, APIs and marketing tools.
  • Maintain and optimize WordPress databases and overall site performance.
  • Ensure adherence to WordPress performance, security and deployment best practices.

Troubleshooting & Maintenance

  • Troubleshoot, debug and resolve site issues across environments.
  • Stay current with WordPress core updates, plugin ecosystems and security standards.

Collaboration & Project Support

  • Collaborate with designers, front-end developers and project managers to deliver complete solutions.
  • Provide project updates and technical guidance to internal teams.
 

Qualifications:

Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Web Development or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 1–3 years of professional WordPress development experience.
  • Experience working with modern WordPress workflows, including custom themes, plugin development and Git-based source control.
  • Familiarity with hosting platforms, staging environments and deployment workflows.
Technical Skills
  • Strong experience developing with WordPress.
  • Proficiency in PHP, HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
  • Experience creating custom themes and plugins (beyond page builder tools).
  • Understanding of WordPress performance, security and deployment best practices.
Soft Skills
  • Strong attention to detail, especially in implementing designs and maintaining consistency.
  • Problem-solving mindset with the ability to troubleshoot and debug effectively.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to cross-functional teams.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Collaborative approach and openness to feedback.
Nice-to-haves
  • Experience working in an agency or client-service environment.
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG) and SEO best practices.
  • Experience integrating marketing tools or analytics platforms within WordPress.
  • Exposure to modern front-end frameworks or headless WordPress implementations.
This position provides a market-competitive base salary between $55,000 and $65,000, with the final amount determined by the candidates' experience and qualifications.
