    Happy Q4 and happy planning season! You’re probably thinking to yourself, “Didn’t I just sit at my computer staring a blank screen while planning for 2016?” This year is flying so fast, so it probably feels like it. But in order to have a successful 2017, the planning needs to start now.
    Setting goals is the single most important piece to any marketing strategy, because it gives you a target to hit and compare your results to, letting you know whether what you did was effective or not. Before you start setting goals and planning for 2017, it’s crucial to reflect on 2016. Here are some considerations as you head into the next year.
    1. What goals did you accomplish and how were you able to achieve them?
    2. What goals were you not able to accomplish and why?
    3. With the goals you weren’t able to accomplish, do you envision having the same road blocks in 2017?
    Once you answer the above questions, you’ll have a better idea of how to approach planning. You don’t want to stumble across the same round blocks again!
    To help you begin planning as we know it can be a large undertaking, thunder::tech has created a marketing goals worksheet that is FREE to download. This can at least get your mind going as in some cases we know much larger exercises are needed.     In addition to the goals worksheet, we have also provided a list of “starter questions” to also help prepare yourself for planning meetings.
    1. What is the current state of your brand?
    a. How do internal employees view you?
    b. How do external customers view you?
    2. What is the desired state of the brand?
    a. How do you want internal employees and external customers to view you?
    3. What is the challenge preventing you from achieving the desired state?
    a. What resource gaps and constraints do you need to overcome to achieve your strategy?
    4. What is your brand truth?
    a. What do you have that no other competitor has?
    b. What do you not have that your competitors do?
    c. What value do you really bring that benefits your market in ways that your competitors wouldn’t dream of proposing?
    5. What is your target audience?
    a. What do you want each of these target audiences to do?
    b. What action should they take?
    One additional rule of thumb that we like to follow at thunder::tech is the C.O.P.E. method (Create Once, Publish Everywhere). Once you have one piece of marketing created, make sure it's being repurposed out to all the appropriate channels. That way, you're extending the life of your marketing by recycling them into other content items.
